More about

Rooted Archives

This project currently benefits descendants of enslaved African American / Black ancestry community members that live in Minnesota but we hope to make a broader national impact soon with your support. Rooted Archives focuses on providing preservation skills and techniques to research and archive family history that has been historically suppressed and exploited. The African American / Black community has a specific need to leave a legacy to our future descendants by documenting stories told by us for the uplifting and preservation of the future of our community.

The ADOS (African Descendants of Slavery) community has had historical barriers to accessing family historical data, documentation, and archival. Many stories told focus on the enslavement of our people and not the many advancements made and that continue to be made to American society as we know it. Documenting family history is one avenue to help increase the presence of archived storytelling of the African American / Black community.

“The stories we tell each other matter. The images we consume matter.”
